A total of 7499 M4A4s were produced between July 1942 and September 1943.   All had the three-piece transmission cover.   The Americans only used the M4A4 for training in the USA.   7167 were supplied to the British, where it was known as the Sherman V.   It was the most numerous Sherman type used by the British, with whom it had an excellent service record.
