The M4A4-based Sherman ARV Mk. 1 was the most numerous British Armoured recovery vehicle of the Normandy campaign - some even serving with the Churchill-equippped Tank Brigades.   It consisted of a turretless M4A4 chassis fitted with a simple jib crane on a boom at the front.   A swivel-type towing attachment was fitted at the rear and the vehicle carried towbars with connectors adapted to different types of vehicle.    Wood planks and blocks were used to prevent vehicles slipping during recovery.
