Production deliveries started in September 1944 and the first unit started conversion in December.   Armed with a "compact" version of the 17pdr. (eventually called the 77mm) the new tank was fast and reliable, but arrived too late to make any real impact in World War 2.   It equipped British armoured units post-war and some remained in service until the early sixties.
